How to measuring animal’s SpO2 and Pulse rate more accurately?
Pulse oximetry is a very useful diagnostic and monitoring tool that has become commonplace in veterinary clinics. It measures the percentage of haemoglobin saturated with oxygen, and is an indirect measure of arterial oxygen levels.
However, if you don't place the SpO2 sensor properly, you may get false readings. Causes for false readings:
How to confirm whether you already found the right site? When the signal of pluse strength is more than 3 levels, then you find the right site.
Here are some suggestions to measure the SPO2 and pulse rate:
Pulse oximetry is a very useful diagnostic and monitoring tool that has become commonplace in veterinary clinics. It measures the percentage of haemoglobin saturated with oxygen, and is an indirect measure of arterial oxygen levels.
However, if you don't place the SpO2 sensor properly, you may get false readings. Causes for false readings:
- motion artefact
- peripheral vasoconstriction/low tissue perfusion from hypothermia or shock
- pigmentation of mucous membranes
- thick hair coat
- haemoglobin abnormalities (carboxyhaemoglobin and methaemoglobin, for example)
How to confirm whether you already found the right site? When the signal of pluse strength is more than 3 levels, then you find the right site.
Here are some suggestions to measure the SPO2 and pulse rate:
- Avoid the ambient light interference. Because we use the photovoltaic digital SpO2 technology, so we recommend you to use a cloth to cover to avoid the ambient light when testing.
- Movement interference. Keep animals and the SpO2 sensor stationary when testing.
- Test site: different test site may affect the measurement. Normally, the test sites are ear, tongue and tail etc. We suggest to test on some thick parts such as root of ear and root of tail etc.
- Test some parts which are rich of capillaries.
- Don't test the part with deep skin color.
