Basis of Respiratory Parameters on the Monitor
Principle of respiration measurement
Due to the breathing activity of the patient's thorax, the impedance changes between the RA and LL electrodes. The monitor measures the respiration rate by detecting the change in the thoracic impedance between the RA and LL electrodes, and generates a breathing wave on the screen.

Factors Affecting Respiratory Monitoring
To monitor breathing, no additional electrodes are required, but the placement of electrodes is very important. Some patients, due to their clinical condition, laterally expand their thorax resulting in negative intrathoracic pressure. In this case, it is best to place the two respiration electrodes on the right midaxillary line and the left thoracic area where breathing is most active to obtain optimal respiration waves.
Second: Place the white RA (right arm) and red LL (right leg) electrodes diagonally for optimal respiration waves. The hepatic region and ventricle should be avoided in line with the respiratory electrodes, so as to avoid cardiac overlay or artefacts from pulsatile blood flow, which is especially important in neonates.
Third: Respiratory monitoring is not suitable for patients with high range of motion, as this may lead to false alarms.
